Sweet smells

A walk from San Juan to Gistain to Serveto to Plan proved a delight to the senses: wonderful blossoms and even more wonderful scents-the sweet aroma of apple blossom, the honey smell of the "boj" boxwood, lavender, thyme, mint and broom-a spiky plant with a delicious scented yellow flower.

In the meadows of Dondelapart near San Juan, minature versions of daffodils grow. A small bouquet in a vase imparts a wonderful heady, exotic scent to my home.

Basa de la Mora

A 2.45 minute walk up and a 2 hour walk down. The going is steep in parts but for once going downhill I didn't suffer from mashed toes at the end. I have to say a big thank you to Tiso outdoor shop in Belfast for showing me the three knot boot lace up. You knot boot laces midway, at top and at midway point again. Feet are really well held in place, hence no sore toes.

Mid April and the snow is melting, though we were in time to see the lake with a covering of ice. Flowers are springing up, the air smells of pine, birds are chirping away, balls of frogspawn are to be seen in mountain ponds, yes spring is very much in the air.

San Juan de Toledo

On entering the church in the little village of San Juan de Toledo, one is immediately struck by the artwork contained in its interior; frescos dating back to 1599, the painted baptism well, murals... Whatismore, the site is truly spectacular: a 4km drive along a narrow road leads you to the church set in the flank of the Peña Montanesa mountain. The Collada (pass) de Sotal looms in the distance with a small hermitage situated mid way between the village and the pass. Another path leads to the Monasterio San Victorian near Los Molinos. I am told an approx 3 and a half hour walk round trip. There is only one family living in the village, so if you make the highly recommended trip to San Juan, it is worth calling with them to get the key to the church.
