200m of climbing with harness on via ferrata. The ladders are quite impressive from a distance, the changeover from one to another was impressive in reality. From the ladders, you pass through the mountain legs wedged on both walls to avoid wetting feet in stream below exiting in canyon. Across the border from Spain to France, an hour and a quarter drive from Chistau Valley to start of walk in carpark of Aubert Lake in Neouvielle Natural Park. First day of first Ultra Trail Sobrarbe. About 30 odd runners set out from Abizanda at 10am to cover the first stage to Ainsa via Escanilla, Mesón de Liguerre, Liguerre de Cinca, Entremón, Mediano, Humo de Muro, Griébal and Banastón. 6 hour round trip starting from Puyarruego along the forest track to Plan de l'Abet refuge and then back to San Juan de Plan via the Selva. Saw loads of animal tracks: wild boar, deer, fox...but no animals, too much chat going on. Snow conditions were good for "raquetas". Fantastic scenery and lots of virgin snow to trek through.

Rhododendrons in bloom in Tabiernes Valley. This was taken on the lower slopes today 27th June, so my advise is to come in 10 days or so for a truly splendid show of pink bloom in the valley that climbs up to Señal de Viados. Between Ainsa and Alquezar, you can see fields full of poppies - a sign that the field has not been treated with fertiliziers, chemicals...From Ainsa direction France, poppy fields are visible up until the Meson de Puertolas. The Cirque de Gavarnie is classified UNESCO and has the highest waterfall in Europe. 14th May and the Sen has still got a covering of ice and snow. A 2 hour walk up from L'Engrota. Marmots whistled but there were no sightings. We did see some "sarrio" Pyrenean mountain goats at L'Engrota: they come down early morning and late evening for salt placed on large stone slabs, normally for sheep. Flowers has always a delight: late July holds the promise of slopes full of irises.

Along the "ribera de Gistain", you can currently find fields full of yellow daffodils and white pheasant's eye or "narcissus poeticus". A splendour to behold and a delight to smell. A 2.45 minute walk up and a 2 hour walk down. The going is steep in parts but for once going downhill I didn't suffer from mashed toes at the end. After a week of showers-heavy, medium and light-and heavy laden low skies, the sun finally broke through to reveal snow on the higher peaks. What a constrast to see the green fields near Ainsa, sunny blue sky and the white capped Monte Perdido. My neighbouring village of Plan is celebrating. The party runs from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10 September 2005.
